Soprano Shirley Sutherland and acclaimed brass band Cape Town Concert Brass will be staging a one-night-only charity performance at the St James Auditorium in Kenilworth on 5 March 2010. Proceeds from this concert will go to Huis Luckhoff.

Cape Town Concert Brass is a collection of amateur musicians configured as a traditional English Brass Band. Their repertoire varies from classical to jazz to arrangements of popular tunes. The band has its origins in the school orchestras of which many members were a part. Notably, most of the members of the Cape Town Concert Brass group were former brass pupils at Grey High School in Port Elizabeth and Cape Town’s Bishops.

This wonderful performance starts at 19h30 on the 5th of March.

Tickets are available for a donation of just R50 each. The concert is suitable for all ages and tickets can be purchased by calling or 021 685 6824. There are just 1400 unreserved seats and there is secure parking nearby.

Woolworths Piazza in Seapoint have added Huis Luckhoff to their charity list and have bestowed one day per week (Saturday), every week that Huis Luckhoff may collect what they call ‘date expired goods’. The goodies that we collect are all still quite fresh and ranges from salads and veggies to breads and cakes and even meats!

The foods manager, Bredon, was very helpful and excited to add us to their very full list of charitable organisations and we are ever so thankful for their support!

Due to the sad fact that some organisations unfortunately take advantage of organisations like Woolworths Piazza’s goodwill, Mr Burmeister, Manager of Huis Luckhoff had to sign and agree to certain conditions including: that none of the food may be given or sold to third parties – all the food must be given to Huis Luckhoff residents only.

To ensure this agreement is kept, Woolworths Piazza may decide to conduct site inspections to its charitable organisations with unannounced visits.

The invitation was open to anyone that would attempt a hike of Lion’s Head at sunrise (6am) on a weekday. All we asked in return was that they would provide an optional donation of R25 per person which would be utilised to spread Christmas cheer at Huis Luckhoff.

It was a magnificent morning, view photos of the hike on the Donate an Hour Facebook group.

We intend to try and make these charitable events a regular happening during 2010, and would be most happy to hear your suggestions.

As we discovered later, the hostels raise internal funds for benevolent actions outside the university…. and this is an amazing fact I’m sure very few people are aware of.

They not only came and did some essential paintwork, but also purchased the paint from their funds!

No less than 20 students  volunteered for the maintenance work over a period of 3 days.
The old folks were amazed initially, but afterwards really enjoyed having the youngsters bustling away.

More than 60% of the Huis Luckhoff residents are government old-age pensioners, which is the reason why there are no funds and the Home mostly relies on volunteer work such as was offered by UCT.

In addition, the painted glass windows of the chapel were in a sad state, so we found some volunteers to refurbish the windows. We were fortunate to receive a large donation of the required glass stain from Dala, the artists’ paint manufacturers in Killarney Gardens.

A very big thank you again to the UCT students and Dala, Killarney Gardens!

There was a great turn-out and the event sold-out of just about everything on offer by 12pm!

According to Mr Burmeister, “As usual it was a lovely event.  Families, friends and residents met and enjoyed the fete around all the different stalls.   There was a jumping castle, face painting and sand art for the children to keep them busy.  The not so young enjoyed coffee, tea and eatables while chatting their hearts out.  We thank everyone for their support and trust and that they will be back 2010 with pockets full of money.”

As we are a government subsidised home, we strive our utmost to provide a comfortable environment to all our tenants with a basic diet, but in recent months this has been a real challenge. This website together with a fundraising campaign Donate an Hour will aim to raise funds for the home’s upliftment: people, maintenance and the wonderful nursing staff.

We are always in need of specialised skills such as carpenters, plumbers, tilers – well general building maintenance and of course any charitable funds, magazines, books! If you have such skills or are able to donate towards our fund, we would hugely appreciate your support. Donations take place through our website or on the Donate an Hour campaign website.
